(B8) Social Media: Collating Spreads & Working on Content

CALL WITH PEG:

CCTV - Include date: how many weeks ago, underneath each image - Gives it to be a reason to be interested - Using one platform to represent another, using instagram dates in a different context - Use CCTV footage as monthly image Fine using what we have and comment about gathering over time, an ongoing Include text details More type based - Experiment more with polarisation type experiments - Can be used as stand out pages that act as a visual break Visually related imagery - Could make some stand out/one off spreads using these random Google search topics (Sidewalk, shadow, plank etc) - Try concrete poetry-esque layouts (Evie research inspired)

TO DO TODAY: > Random search results pages (plank) > Text with graph as a baseline - Celebrities? - Key word search (google alerts) to get content - Rabbit hole imagery > Another visually similar image search - Think about layout & content - Tip ins, french folds?

RESEARCH:

En Mille Morceaux:  https://naranjoetxeberria.com/en-mille-morceaux-2018/

Chapelle Saint-Jacques is a Contemporary Art centre based in Saint Gaudens (France). From N-E we have designed the Journal, a newspaper we develop yearly since 2016 that includes their Art schedule as well as all the different workshops and activities that take place inside or outside the centre.

Turning Deconstructivism into the aesthetics that composed the Journal, inspiring ourselves by these buildings we have taken the most recognizable details and applied them to different graphic elements.

From the creation of new images, the different grids, the margins, the composition of the text to the alignment of the images themselves give this feeling of controlled chaos that the movement does.

Paloma CaƱizares Office:

Paloma CaƱizares Office is an international practice that was established in 2004 and operates within the fields of architecture, interior design, product editing and trend consultancy. The vision of the brand is based on a functional as well as aesthetic approach in a wide range of design areas.

The main concept represents the power of the first impact and the quest for beauty in what is different and rare as well as in experimentation.

When developing the concept, we were inspired by Ed Ruscha´s work and his ability to create an intriguing atmospheric feeling using typography and defocusing type.

USING GOOGLE TRENDS & GRAPHS:

Here using the data from Google Trends about Kanye West to develop a visual.
On the left, taking text from trending articles about each celebrity and placing it along the path of search frequency.
- Still very clearly a line/graph, is this a good thing?
- Unsure of what to do with the shape.

On the right, trying to incorporate the data into the book, adding in layers to add to the rabbit hole idea, but I think it's way too much visually and ultimately doesn't communicate much.
- Like the use of numbers (these are from the graph - frequency of searches), could try and use these more within the concept.
- The data links well to monitoring, just need to be more considerate of how it's used.

Focusing on the numbers more, using these along with the dates to demonstrate the theme of monitoring.
These feel much more effective, and communicate a different feeling to the audience, presents a sense of intrigue.
- The blurred imagery helps further the intrigue, is a different visual to what we currently have. Also makes it easier to read the text.

VISUALLY SIMILAR SEARCH RESULTS:

Using the random items on the right that were recognised (in initial ideas) to develop imagery for the publication.
- Linking to the theme of rabbit holes and tangents

Starting with plank:
- Thinking about the inverting of colours, test it out (links to polarity but could be relevant here).

- Not enough contrast, in a way much more difficult to look at.
- Layout, what does it mean? Communicate?

- Easier to read when not inverted.

- Using on the imagery on Wikipedia, thinking about how to bring concepts together.
- Don't think it's very effective, more difficult to understand the theme we're trying to communicate, better to keep these as separate ideas.

What to do with the plank?
- Present the information as is, see what comes of it?

Thinking more about the idea of tangents, how we can make these work when the content is more random?
- Peg's designed with circling and lines (similar to mindmap) with different type.
- Could use the hyperlinked words on wikipedia as the focal point? Easy to get in a loop hole of research with this feature:

Application:

They feel too literal, something about the mindmap idea isn't working here. It's telling the audience rather than letting them refer and understand the content for themselve.
- Can simplify and abstract more.
- Think about the purpose of the content, how was it initially presented to me on the web? Popped up, seemed unrelated. How can I transfer this to the book?

^Simplifying the circling to be just the key words, also changing the typeface here. Works much better, could do something with the imagery found on Wikipedia in relation to the key words:

Layout within publication, could be a tip in:

Using the form of the book to physically represent the random 'pop up' effect it had when I first completed the search. Links well to the rabbit hole theme.
- Placing between the pages where that content was highlighted as a topic of interest from the photo (see earlier screenshots in blog).
- Can be placed anywhere within book really.

IMAGE TREATMENT:

Wanting to experiment with the treatment of images, blurring the images before showed how digital manipulation can influence the way we look at the work.

In print images can be printed by layering coloured dots (used in newspapers):

Apply this to pages that might be a little dull:

With halftone edit:

Using a digital technique that replicates a physical production technique is an interesting play on our concept, thinking about the different materials and matter, then applying these in different ways.
- Would be good to see how this looks when printed.

Reflecting:
  • We're getting a clearer picture of what works to communicate these different themes, and starting to think about print as a function with tip ins and image treatment.
  • Need to start developing the overall aesthetics, deciding on typefaces to use as well as colour palette and layout.
    - Currently each page has a very different layout, it would be good to consider them more as part of a collection so using the same grid throughout, applying it to some pages and not to others.
  • Can start working on visual language over the weekend and next week.
    - Typefaces: like the use of multiple typefaces, serif, sans, heavy sans, digital?
  • Should gather together all pages to define what needs more work and what's going well at the moment.
