(B7) Research Brief: Final Test Prints

Front cover of the book:
- Don't want something that's too overpowering.
- Should relate to the theme of human movement/observation.
- Text?

Using the imagery with and without sudoku book to bring attention to the hand positions, highlighting the movement/human-ness of sudoku.
- Using title 'Documenting sudoku' don't know if this is something that I think the book is showcasing but I can't think of a different title.
- This cover feels to similar to some of the pages inside the book. I'd want to present a slightly different visual for the cover (maybe more minimal).
- Playing with justifying text to balance out the cover.
- Not sure if this is the way to go with both images on the cover, having something less might communicate mor.

- Using one image and spacing out the text.
- This to me looks very corporate, it doesn't communicate the same tone and the inside pages of the publications.

- Same here as the test above.
- Like the one image though, could think about what back could display?

- Experimenting with larger images. Still the text isn't working, I don't think it's needed for this publication. Keeping it free form text would be the most beneficial.
- Like the front and back idea, think it works really well for the publication, but the smaller images might be a better size for it?

^Front

^ Back
- This works nicely, it's not too invasive, doesn't present any context that could deter the audience from interacting with it. By having the hands only as the front it presents a more ambiguous tone to the audience so then will then interpret the content as they choose, rather than approaching it with an agenda.

Final book printed out, think it works really well the layouts are more effective and having the white pages at the start and end help bring a start to the end of the book.
- Cover works nicely with this example too!
Tested on bulky newsprint also:

Also printed an older test book on 90gsm olin paper:

The different paper stocks give a very different tone to the books, bulky newsprint is more soft and gentle, has a nice texture to it. Olin 90gsm seems more polished.

What I like about the olin 90gsm is that you see a faint image of what's on the next page as well as the previous one, having this links back to an earlier theme of palimpsest that I explored. I think it's appropriate here but should test with a different weight to make sure.

I tested printing the books with photos and scans, the scans on studio printers are too gritty, need to make a test for digital print.
1. Olin 120gsm (2 sided, mix of photos and scans)
2. Olin 90gsm (2 sided, mix of photos and scans)
^ Make these today and send of to digital print. Pick up on tuesday, decide a final production, make book and send to print.
