Blue highlight = essay research influence
> Printed the layouts so I can navigate them physically and see how they work in person, need to keep producing things physically to understand the navigational aspect as well as see the work as a whole.
Single column layout with image index:
Notes:
- Chapters need numbering (show hierarchy be used in contents)
- Subheadings are too low on some pages (learnt from research that eye typically looks at the top of the page for headings so want information to be as easily retrevable from the design to avoid extraneous processing)
- Image index could work with page numbers added otherwise navigation is difficult (although now know it is more effective to have images within the text)
Columned Chapters:
Notes:
- Issues with navigation and the ye not naturally drawing to where it is needed to go (unsuccessful hierarchy development)
- Not enough white space between subchapters (becomes cluttered and overpowering as a visual)
Columned Chapters on Separate Pages:
Notes:
- Contents page needs more consideration, central layout isn't effective.
- The subchapter titles being on new pages works really well, eye naturally falls there.
- The new page for subchapters also leaves white space on the pages, prevents cluttering and cognitive overload.
- Capitalisation on 'must' and 'must not' comes across as aggressive, what can be done to change this?
- introducing colour (think back to research)
- icons? What effect would this have, would it become a distraction? - Page 9 works well despite breaking the rule for new subchapter new page because the chapters are so short. There is enough white space between the chapter to draw the eye in an understand the hierarchy of the page.
- Some of the spacing on image pages looks wonky, what could be done about this? Need to think.
- Typographic Cueing is working well within the text (Foster and Coles, 2007) developing a strong hierarchy thats repeated and easily understood.
Was really great to handle the layouts, it feels a lot different compared to a screen.
What to do next?
> Think about typeface, ask peers which they prefer, find easier etc.
> Numbering, continue with the experiments
> Figure out spacing on imagery issues
> Imagery, use existing, create own (need to talk to peers and tutor)

Thinking about the line length of the text
- noticed I just formatted the type to be 12pt at the start of the project but didn't consider the size of the publication or line length and how it will impact reading experience.
![]() |
| 11 pt |
Asked peers which they prefer:
- Many said they preferred the size of the 12pt type but found the 11pt type more appealing as the times were longer.
- Felt the 11pt type image could be made bigger then it would be the best of both.
- One mentioned the layout being different on the 11pt image and they didn't like it (error on my part would need to make adjustments).
Tested printing again, printed 11pt type at 75% becomes larger than A4 and text is same size as 12pt original printed.
ZOE:
Does not serifs want to read serifs, instantly don't want to read it.
- Basis:
rather read this than serifs but more likely to read helvetica - Helvetica:
More willing to read this than basis
Feels bigger than basis - Bodoni:
Don't want to read at all - Times:
More willing to read than bodoni but still don't want to read it
- Basis:
Likes the typeface seems similar to the other sans serif typeface. - Helvetica:
Again this one is preferred to the others - Bodoni:
Find this very difficult to read, think this is because it's got thick and thin sections making it a little confusing to look at. - Times:
Prefers this type of serif but still find the sans serif typefaces more appealing
SOPH:
- Basis:
Likes this typeface a lot, looks really good with the text. - Helvetica:
Again works well, nice for the titles when in bold. - Bodoni:
Don't like it at all, very difficult to read because it's so small. - Times:
Likes this one too, it's a little small if it was larger would be nicer to read.
