Met up with Felix today to take photos around Sheffield.
Left at 6:30 to get the morning sunlight so some photos could have more interest to them.
Had a list of places to photograph but also wanted to have some more spontaneous shots of things we saw that resonated with us in relation to the theme 'sense of place'.
On route:
Felix's Photographs:
Capturing photos of places within the city that give it a sense of place, whether that's because they've changed physically or the fact they've stayed the same. If things have altered around them be they're as they were.
Certain locations and items around the streets held memory for us as we both grew up in Sheffield. This shows in the photographs as some of the photos focus on the odd element you might miss in a space if you didn't think to look for it.
There seems to be a clear difference between photos of green spaces and photos of buildings, this feels like it connects to the essay introduction as there is discussion of divide between logic/structure and feeling/emotion.
The time of day the photos were taken, lighting and editing makes for a dreamy quality over the imagery, and add a deeper feeling to objects that might typically be ignored or photos that some may see as surface level.
Felix's Comments on the Photography:
I was keen to keep the photographs as natural and neutral as possible to document the features and places Evie and I are so fond of in Sheffield. In doing this it removes any sort of confirmation bias or prejudice we have towards the subject and shows it at its face value for the viewer to appreciate. Often photographs of Sheffield tend to just support the narrative of it being a green city with an industrial past so we made sure to photograph things as they were in the moment.
It was great to go and take the photos with Felix, I could direct him in terms of how i wanted the shots to be and he was so open to my suggestions (even though some of them ended up looking rubbish when I thought they'd look great).
Being able to be there to witness someone else's creative process was really interesting, I feel this opportunity gave me confidence to work with creatives outside my field more.
Felix was really excited to see how the project would develop and incorporate his photos, this was really great to hear!
