Test prints came back on different paper stock from digital print:
- The Cocoon Silk was too plasticy it felt too polished for this publication. I want the pages to have a softer texture to them.
- The colours of the images were slightly different on the Cyclus paper it doesn't negatively impact the image and the warm tone of the paper is really appealing for this publication. The texture of the paper is really tactile and nice to hold.
- Olin was more white than the other papers but still had a slight warm tone to it. It held the colour of the photographs well and has a slight texture to the paper. 120gsm was better than 90gsm as the imagery didn't bleed through.
Will be using a combination of different paper stock in the publication, using the materiality to further the themes of the publication. Will use:
- Bulky newsprint (library, will need to print in studio)
- Cyclus 120gsm (digital print)
- Olin (digital print)

- Essay Introduction
- Allotment - When I was younger I would walk along the paths outside the allotments and peek in through the gaps in the gates, they were always so mysterious to me. The first time I went to this one was when I was a teenager, it felt weird, me being in a space I knew was there but wasn't allowed to be in, to now just standing in it.It's become somewhere during the pandemic where my friends and I would go to hang out, we welcomed in the new year here (at 12 noon) to welcome in 2021 in the most pandemic-y way possible. I would come here with my boyfriend for date nights, we would get a takeaway, sit on camping chairs by a fire, eating Chinese food, and drinking wine. The view from the allotment has changed over time, buildings being put up and knocked down but the feeling has stayed the same.
- Post box - When on walks with mama by the woods we would always look out for this postbox, we could never remember which wall it was on along the road so it would catch us by surprise everytime.
On bonfire night we'd know we were nearly at the park once we saw the letter box in the wall, it became a landmark for navigation in my head, even though I still don't know which wall it's on. - Dancing stage - My sister and I would do performances on the small concrete platform outside the gardeners society building in the woods, we would dance for our parents, spinning and twirling. My sister did ballet so would practice routines while I'd run around like a mad thing. We quickly starting calling the little platform 'the dancing stage'.
- Library entrance - The university library became a trendy place to go and revise for exams when I was in sixth form. The entrance had a super cool small desert chamber full of cacti and succulents, the whole entrance space was made from glass and would feel like a sauna during the summer.
- Bingham tree - When I was 12 or 13 I would go to the park at the bottom of my road and climb this giant tree, I would sit and read, pretending I was in a film. I'd never climb that high as I'm terrified of heights but it felt 'cool' to be sat in a tree for a little bit at least.
- Tiny house - I'd always notice this house when walking along to the shops from my house, it was so tiny and stood out like a sore thumb on the street. I always wondered what it was like from the inside, did it feel as odd as it looks from the outside?
DEVELOPMENT:
Placing text into spaces within the publication next to images they're discussing.
- Used digital text to figure out the placement then can add in hand written text where appropriate.

The essay is at the beginning of the text, when talking to peers about the project and their experiences of Sheffield many of them said in the video calls that they found it easier to grasp the concept after reading the text. It provides a structure to the work
- Should there be something on this side? and image?
Experimenting with how the different paper stocks could interact with each other using pages with text only but also introducing imagery to the tip-ins. Not sure whether having text on the page would be the best way to go as the text tip-ins would be on a more of white paper stock (bulky newsprint) which compromised the colour. Seeing these next to the other imagery might be too contrasting.
Type used currently is Times, not sure how it suits the tone of the book. Works for the essay in presenting a formal document but is this how I want to communicate the essay?
IvyPresto:
Basis:
Sans serif type somehow feels more distant than serif typeface, it's harsh and cold, comes across as much more digital than a serif typeface.
Printed a test spread at B5 and the size was too large, the book should be larger than current working size (138 x 193mm) but not at large as B5, it feels impersonal and is difficult to get involved with when this size.
- A smaller scale makes you feel you can be invested in it and will help reduce it feeling flimsy when printed.
Test sizes:
A5 was the most successful, when handling books of the same size I have a home it felt comforting and familiar, I think having a size that is less know makes the book feel different as an object.
