602: Personal Branding Development

Praises from my presentation showed that the design decision I was working with were successful in communicating myself as a designer.

Want to keep the typefaces used, as well as the small hand drawn elements to add a lightness to the branding. Subtle but effective is what I'm going for.

The tone of voice is what's key, I felt how I spoke about myself during task 4 was successful, not overly professional but not too casual either. It's important for my branding to have a personal touch to it, I think having personality makes you more approachable and this is something I want to communicate.

STUDIO NAME:
I avoided making one of these as I felt I didn't want to present myself as a studio since I'm wanting to work in a team with other designers, however, since the initial task I think I would benefit from having an identity that is distinguishable from myself as an individual.

I tend to take things about design to heart, as I'm sure many other creatives do, so having a branding that doesn't include my name might help me distance myself from criticism and see it more objectively. The benefits of going by a studio name also helps reduce any prejudgement on who you are as a person and focuses on you as a brand, I think this is something I'd benefit from and so need to come up with a studio name.

Ideas:

  1. Hafun
    - I often say "have fun" when someone leaves to run an errand, or has somewhere to be. My boyfriend thought making this a word "hafun" could be a good studio name.
  2. Eaves
    - "Eves" is what people tend to start callin me once they get to know me, it just happens naturally and I'm not sure why. Thought about how this could become a studio name and Eaves is pronounced the same but you wouldn't think it has anything to do with my name.
    - Feel like it might be a little to personal for me to use as a studio name.
Things about me:
  • From Sheffield (love the city)
    > S-Studio
  • Love sweets (probably too much for an adult)
  • Love books
    > Bind
    > Spiral Studio - links to bind and my hair (curly)
    >
    Creep
    > Rag
    > Jog
  • Attempting to sew
  • Have a cheese plant I treat like my child
  • 1 of 5 siblings
    > Fifth Studio
    > Fifth Design
    > Second Studio (since I'm the 2nd eldest)
  •  Fountside flats favourite home growing up
    > Fountside Design (feels a bit cold, want there to be some personality)
  • Cycling
    > Spoke
    > Truss

BRANDING:
Working with the branding I used for my task 4 presentation.
Typefaces: Neue Haas Unica W1G & IvyPresto Text.

Looking online at social media accounts for how people present themselves online:

There's a variety of different icons people use but the ones that stand out are the ones that are easily recognisable and readable when so small. Will just use my name for the time being before I've decided on a studio name.

Using both typefaces, to see which looks better, feel it will be dependent on how it looks as a logotype.
The smiley face works well as a small motif, can go with or without it.

Colour Palette: Want to keep it neutral, shouldn't overpower any work presented.
Should be in CMYK so then when it's printed will look the same as online.

Playing with text and image only, think these could be better to use for social media presence as they are much more visible from a distance, more easily recognised.

The green and pink seemed too light, could do with having a darker colour so more can be used interchangeably.

Working on developing business cards (using "hafun" as a studio title), thinking about tying in more elements like I did in my task 4 presentation, smiley face and loopy arrow lines:

Thinking of making the smiley face less of a feature on the business cards, could be embossed or spot gloss?

TONE OF VOICE WORK BOOKLET:
It was really great to work through this booklet and figure out some of my priorities as well as insecurities I can work on while establishing my profesional career.
On the whole I feel confident in a designer but I need to get better at trusting myself, through projects that have been more self directed or passion projects I feel this is where I thrive. What I'm going to get better at working on is translating how I approach more commercial or direct briefs.
