602: Book Residencies, Reserach

Wanting to look more into book residencies and opportunities to learn bore about the book/print industry. Emailed Dom to see if she knew anything or of anyone I could talk to to find out more, her reply:

I've not heard of many residencies in the UK that are book specific which is why I was asking about; however, there are many printmaking ones and I've found that printmakers are very interested in book artists and seem to welcome applications from them!

I'd also suggest taking a look at the opps listings in Printmaking Today Mag and the Book Arts Newsletter. Book/print residencies come up often in those! They may be more 'artist' led rather than 'designer' but something may come up.

Hope some of these help; as mentioned above, some definitely come from more of an 'artist' background but sure they'd be open to suggestions and you'd be able to tailor residencies based on your own practice.

- Had a look at this previously, really like the sound of the residency need to keep an eye on when they're accepting applications again.

London Centre for Book Arts may post about any book related opportunities and they offer workshops/submissions for 'A6 books'.

RESEARCH:

1. Centre for Book Arts, Book Artists Residency:
https://centerforbookarts.org/opportunities/book-artists-in-residence
The Center for Book Arts will award scholarships to individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the artistic endeavors of the book arts. The purpose of this program is to provide opportunities to emerging artists committed to developing careers in the book arts field, and to further the growth of this artistic profession. The award includes a cash stipend plus a materials budget and 24 hour access to the Center’s printing and binding facilities for a full year.
- Would be great to access an opportunity like this, sign ups will open later in the year. Keep an eye out and look at requirements to figure out if that's achievable and if so when.

2. Book Arts Newsletter:
  • Plenty of book binding opportunities but I they're in person in other countries. Want to keep a lookout for any opportunities I can access remotely or in the UK.
  • Bookbinding: Three Structures Rachel Hazell
    - The Travelling Bookbinder Edinburgh, UK, 8th-9th May 2021
A rare chance to attend a purely structural bookbinding workshop with Rachel in Edinburgh. Bind three books in a weekend – two hardbacks and a long stitch. Discover how to cut, fold, mark, sew and glue useful book forms. Take away three handbound books and the knowledge to create many more.
Over two days you will learn how to make:
    i) A Case Binding – sew a book block using French Reinforced stitch and create a hard-covered ‘case’ to fit.
ii) A Long Stitch – An elegant structure – an exposed spine sewing. With ‘soft’ covers, not glued.
iii) A Secret Belgian Binding – A two-part binding. The covers and spine pieces are laced together and then inner sections sewn in. £580.00. Book online at: https://www.thetravellingbookbinder.com/product/ bookbinding-three-structures/
    - Wish I had the finances to attend an event like this, could look for ones that are more affordable.

3. Online Exhibition: Wish You/We Were Here/There

David Redfern : Wish I Was Here - Postcard

Dimensions Height : 10cm   Width : 15cm

I posted to myself a whole series of postcards on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Moon landings in 1969 juxtaposed with Captain Cook landing in New Zealand two hundred years earlier in 1769. In August 2018 the Post Office had published a set of stamps titled 'Captain Cook and the Endeavour Voyage' which I used to post fifteen postcards to myself with images of my own work on 'the front'. Only fourteen arrived, one is lost in the post, I'm still waiting.

- Love this idea of posting postcards to himself, a true personal project!

This exhibition was interesting to attend, difficult with the online format, it felt more clunky but a lot of the work projected an interesting take on time. Not the most relevant for book residencies but I found it in the Book Arts Magazine.

4. Rachel Hazell: Book Artist
https://www.thetravellingbookbinder.com/
  • Really amazing courses, rather expensive but could be something to save for.
  • Hazell also has a blog which is all based around books, there are reviews, little projects, poems, love little reads and helpful tips.
  • https://www.toa.st/blogs/magazine/japanese-bookbinding-time-to-make in Toast Magazine explaining stab stitch.
5. East Falls Zine Reading Room
A DIY space in a Philadelphia row house. We have a collection of more than 1,500 zines for visitors to enjoy, and we host regular readings and shows. In the past we’ve featured poets, zine writers, comics artists, textile artists, full bands, solo acts, video artists, and more.
Offered a remote, digital residency for the production of a zine but sign ups closed in February. - Need to work on developing a book/zine concept that's something I really want to produce to have something to apply to these opportunities with.

6. 20:20 Print Exchange
Make 25 prints, send them off, pay £10, receive 20 prints back. Seems like such a brill way to connect with other creatives and pass work around.
- Reminded me of a thought I had for PPP of wanting to get people making for fun, could weave this concept into a print to be sent out and therefore achieving the goal with little cost!

RESIDENCIES:

Fish Factory Art Space: International Residency Programme

Cornwall, residency costs: £250-£400 (2-4wks).
The residency is advertised as an artists residency but the mediums you can work with are very open and it feels like na achievable option for me personally. Affordable, in a lovely location, the art space has a really good vibe to it. Would need to find out more and develop a proposal for it.

Hospitalfields International Residency Programme
The Interdisciplinary Residency Programme at Hospitalfield has been devised to appeal across all art forms, it has been planned as an opportunity to support those working across the arts who recognise that they require some time to focus on the development of their work.
£650 for a two week full board residency.

Extrapool and Knust Residency
This residency seems really fun and exciting, it is much more me than the previous 2. Takes place in the Netherlands which is an achievable location for me, I've emailed to find out more information as there is very little available on their website.
- Believe I saw then on Printed Matter's Virtual Artbook Fair

A6 Books

A6 BOOKS is a new project by the London Centre for Book Arts. The aim is to help promote and distribute books, zines and publications by emerging artists. With a simple criteria (work must be A6 size [105x148mm]) and a rolling, inclusive and open submission process, we hope to create a new way for artists to reach their readers.

- Really like this, something I can very much do already, could reformat my book a day for a week to be A6 size, or create a new zine for the submission. Should aim to do this over easter.

- Also on the website are amazing bookbinding equipment, been wanting to get myself set up with a full kit so could probably find what I need here: https://londonbookarts.org/shop/
