(B7) Research Brief: Publication Refining

Book Experimentation:

^ Adding in full bleed images
- Is a bit too much when both sides are full bleed, would be more effective if one side was full bleed
- Could make tipin not full bleed, see the impact.

^One side full bleed, with blue smaller image tipins
- Don't like the blue colour for the tipins, they don't fit in with the rest of the publication, and I have no reasoning for them to be blue Think back to Mone 2002, bright colours more eye catching, this isn't the aim of the colour, don't want ot add in any hierarchy with colour (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/color-images-more-memorab/)
Colour can be used to develop code by labelling, or provide clarity between items (Olurinola and Tayo, 2015) helping the learner through the text - This isn't the intention, adding colour may create visual difference within the book, keeping everything black and white would avoid this.
- The one side full bleed is much more successful.
- Like the small scale tip in, works well with the rest of the publication, could maybe have one side full bleed and the other not?
- Play around with the image placement on the tipins, a different arrangement might be better for a full visual.

^ Doubling up the images on the tipin
- This feels much more balanced, give some structure, looks better on the top image than the bottom, could maybe have full bleed tipin here?

Finding it much easier to work on the book physically, playing with the pages, taking some out and adding others in then photographing. It's easier to see how this impacts the experience of the book.

Thoughts going through book:

1. Add in a page at the start (end pages) make it feel more clean.

2.
Swap these pages, so acts more like the tipins in previous experiement.

3.
Remove this image, needing less squareness and repetition, wanting to show space for the mind to think within the pages, not overcrowd.

4.
The same here. Think about if anything could go there instead, what would be more appropriate to showcase this thought.

5.
Making this side of the tipin like previous test (but black and white).

6.
Then the other side full bleed, this works better for this spread as a flat lay, and continues with this idea of temporary thought.

7.
Could add in note marks over this full bleed image, representing thought (test it).

Note to self: Once final design is made will need to scan images in at higher resolution to avoid being too blurry or pixelated. Select images print again (larger and scan higher res).

Note marks:

Adding in the notation marks, I really like how this has come out, think it works well at demonstrating human motion, and movement like peggy suggested but in a way that works with the tone of the publication.

Think about the pacing of the book, the start feels very samy and isn't demonstrating what I'd like it to.
- Think about rearranging the book, the pages at the end about temporary thought seem more appropriate to be at the start and then the ones at the start could go toward the end.
- The images need some breathing space too, they're currently very cramped and enclosed, you don't get much time to look at each image and take it in, it's also affecting the pace of the book, it feels rushed. Thinking back to previous research in CoP about white space: 'Use white, or negative, space to create emphasis and draw attention to important elements. Resist the temptation to fill up every bit of space on a page, which can create too much “visual noise” that can confuse or fatigue the viewer' from Typographic Hierarchy, n.d. https://www.fonts.com/content/learning/fyti/typographic-tips/typographic-hierarchy

- Removing the grid from these pages, like the idea, could be refined (used here the same grid repeated twice).

Book so far:

Really think it's getting there, a couple changes to help with the pacing could be made but then I think it's finished.

^Changed the page here, making it less dramatic showing a gradual increase.

Updates:

Finalising tomorrow:
Need to pick out images to work with, which are the ones used in the book?
Print these larger
Scan them in higher res
Rebuild the pages
