603: Tutorial w/Simon

 B7 Research Brief:

  • Think it looks really good, but could be worth trying more jornty layout. Changes in size, a bit a skew, bleed over from the edge of the page to keep the liveliness (for pages with minimal imagery)
    - I really agreed with simon here, experiments were more lively and that's been lost within the gridded structure.
    - Should experiment more with bleeding over pages.
  • Try and work with the tipins as well they're a good way to introduce layering.
  • Not worth compromising the aesthetics of the piece to introduce this lively tone, so be weary of not ruining what I already have.
  • Can have it regimented but then the layouts changing in terms of placement/position.
  • Discussing orientation of imagery and how this impacts the interpretation of the audience. Simon mentioned how he thinks it's better to put the audience into my hands (so hand placement with wrists at the bottom of the page) they have a first person experience.
    - I agree, I think this will help give a sense of connection between the audience and the book, making them more aware of their own movements while interacting with the publication.
    - Having the wrists at the bottom of the page helps the audience feel like they're experiencing the imagery (first person), wrists at the top make for a more observational experience (document).
    - Thinking back to CoP research to do with layout:
Muller-Brockmann (2019), suggests the fewer the differences in size between images the quieter the impression. Feel as though this can be broken here because I want the audience to focus and concentrate on the content, having more sporadic arrangements could help with this.
B4 The Guardian:
  • Expressed how I'm not enjoying the project. (Simon) To capture the joy of the project is think more of how you're having to solve a problem creatively, and that's where the inspiration comes from.
  • Once you land on an interesting idea the enthusiasm picks up again.
  • Don't have to keep going with it, no shame in that.
  • Don't need to be able to create something to be able to propose that idea, the strength is in the idea, that's the most important thing. Can visualise it in vector illustrations. Still needs to be a strong idea.
    - Thought this was interesting, and helpful really. I can focus more on the development of the idea and then propose this for the competition (this will relieve time pressures also).
  • Can focus on something quite abstract, hooking onto activism and protest, being aware then it could be a dark gritty way. The day in the life of someone who's engaged and actively doing stuff, not a narrative but capturing little moments to become a think piece.
    - I really like this idea of it being something not so obvious in targeting you to buy the subscription, so having a think piece that plants a seed would be really interesting.
B9 Home:
  • Struggling with where to start the project. Could start with their photographs, could start with making a list of the places we like outside the city centre think for each of those what we can extract that would be interesting to someone who's never been to those places.
  • Can land on a theme that is consistent (whether that be people, countryside, architecture) then can work from there outward.
  • Important to get things down on paper to see when they start to make sense, easier this way around.
    - This was really helpful, I think its a case of finding the interesting concept and then running with that, currently have a lot of different ideas, so pinning it down to 1 idea and executing that well is important.
