(B7) Research Brief: Refining Imagery & Mini Crit

Today's To Do List:

Working from yesterday:

Looking back at the video of the book with edited images some changed could be made to prevent the pages from feeling too repetitive.

Making alterations to the spread images:

Swapping the order so the images with the book come before those without, wanting highlight the difference and feel this way might be more successful.
- Want to see if the placement on the page should be the same or different (will print these out and test)
- Currently the image sizes are a little different to each other, should they be the same or not?

Communicating thought through the use of the analytical maps made by tracking my movements when I completed a sudoku:

Showing a more calm train of thought with the map layers here:

Represents an approach that is more relaxed, having fun with the puzzle.

Then having the analytic image be more busy, using a combination of the 3 analysis maps, showing a progression of thought, being more complicated:

Think these layered images are really nice, they compliment the imagery on the page and present a similar visual to before (which I felt was a success) but with a more human approach to them since the analysis is drawn by hand.

The white cut outs make the analysis a big part of the page, becomes more of a focal point. This technique has been used with other spreads, there isn't much of the image on image layering without any effects. The layering presents all the content on the same level, it's all happening at the same time, no visual hierarchy, this is a stronger concept and is something I want to communicate.

Next pages:

Mini crit with Peggy:
  • Tip ins to resemble a train of thought. The idea of temporary placement (don't want it to be on the page, like placing a number temporarily) and then it being in the book when I've decided to go for it
  • Suggested a layout that uses a larger grid (representative of the sudoku grid) and then placing small images where I tap my pen.
    - I really like this idea, think it could be a good way to introduce more variation to the publication, but also show a shift in thought, more spaced out, less intense.
  • Adding in colour (red and blue) to see what effect it has on the tone, thinking about biro colours.
    - Could test this, don't want the colours to be too vibrant and garish.

The addition of colour I feel distracts more than it adds, could be a good way to break up the pages and might be nice for the tip ins, but unsure for the larger pages.
When used on the images it works better the hand drawn elements. When the blue and red are applied to these it brings back an aesthetic from school (especially with the grids) which isn't what I'm wanting to achieve.

What to do next?
- Test small images idea
- Print book to see how it feels physically when looking through it
- Experiment with tip ins (both blue and b&w)
- Work on pages in response to the findings from printing
