Thinking back to brief crit with Simon in November, Simon mentioned some comments that I should put into practice today:
- When people interact with this literature it will be at that time but also considerably later than that time, so looking at it as past events even though it was documented in the way it was emerging at the time.
- Could use top trend as topic and top 10-20 posts as content. Then leave reader to interpret it, what relevance it has etc. As twitter documents trends well compared to other social media platforms.

- How should they been seen together? Having some sort of visual consistency should be good, as it's one project they should be understood as a coherent whole rather than individual items.
From yesterday's work the final outcome of an A5 format worked better in the end. It's a size I can produce quickly from home and suits the zine market.
- Keep this size for all books to be made in the rest of the week.
- Keep this size for all books to be made in the rest of the week.
Other visuals to consider is the cover, how these work? Used the #mondaymorning in the top corner of yesterday's book.
- This could be consistent across all covers. so when you see them as a collection they work together.

Other things like typeface can change but

- @izzywestbury - Jimmy Anderson > Tom Brady
- @Vitu_E - I'm not sure I've seen a more complete Test win under Joe Root. There have been walkovers and miracles. But nothing like that kind of control across five days, against India no less.
- @england cricket - 5 overs, 3 maidens, 6 runs, 3 wickets. One of the great spells @jimmy0
- @gauravkarla75 - in 2021 so far india have won a test at gabba and lost a test at chennai... and you thought 2020 was a weird year!
- @englandcricket - Got a message for @Root66? 258 runs in the match, that sensational catch, all in his 100th Test match.
- @OptaJim - 17.8 - James Anderson has averages 17.8 in overseas Test matches since the start of 2019 (30 wickets). Elite.
- @AstifNawaz - Joe Root's England team has many incredible accolades...but beating India at home in this fashion has to be right up there. They won every session of this test match. India have a lot of work to do before the next game. One of England's greatest overseas test wins ever.
Research:
Cricket Pitch
Into a grid:
- The text that's below that middle line, or the image could invert in colour, representing where the stumps go into the ground.
- Or could be a colour change here? Test in design process.
- Or could be a colour change here? Test in design process.
Into a grid:
- Think about text and image placement, where would this go on a page, landscape, vertical?
- Experiment with overlays of image and text in different areas.
- Experiment with overlays of image and text in different areas.
- Could use the different measurements and scales to develop a layout for the pages.
- Have text and image go in specific sections using the rules and markings.
- Think about the visual and how to apply text to these.
Colours?
- Team colours, country flag colours?

- Could use the flag colours within the zine?
England = white and red:
India = orange, white and green (little bits of blue)
Typeface?
On the official websites for the team:
England cricket: Arial (see below)
India cricket: Byker Bold (Closest Find)
Content:
- Use tweets and imagery from these, should there be any other text?- Could give a headline about the win and a date.
- Don't want to add too much text here since it should be documenting the content from twitter (this worked well last time but now there's more text, will be interesting to play with).

Imagery, use images from twitter feed:
Design:
Using the grids of the pitches to arrange the text on the page (initial thought)
- Need to make a more repeatable grid to use for the pages as each page is going to be completely different otherwise.
- Images are red as it's an image of england's player.
Changing the text grid and adding in the twitter username in the typeface used on India's cricket website.
- The username feels too strongly related to twitter in this context, not sure if they should be one there at all for this zine as there's already a fair bit of text.
- The layout again needs considering, just looks as though it's been placed randomly on the page.
Darkening the section at the bottom (relating to stumps being underground from diagram above).
- Like the alteration to the image, makes things more interesting, need to try with other visuals, like cover inverse etc.
- Again text isn't doing much, re-think.
Text where stump is underground.
- This looks a little odd, feels like a photo album but looks a lot like a facebook post.
- Doens't have enough of a connection, needs refining, simple grid is working better, think about how to develop a more successful grid system for the whole book that can be easily applied to all elements.
Using this grid system developed from the cricket pitch and stump diagrams.
- Should provide more structure to develop zine quickly.
Playing with the colours for england images, black and white and then red image (representing the flag).
- Like the idea but the execution isn't there.
- The text needs to be thought about more, where does it belong on the grid.
- Are these colours what I want to go with? Are they too bright?
Moving text
- Making text sit elsewhere on the page, I like how it interacts with the image, it makes the two feel much more related.
- Could do with thinking about weight, if text is overlaid on top of the image it's going to be hard to read in a light weight, should make heavier.
- Using the top of the grid as well could add more visual interest, making the eye move around the page and prevent things from becoming too repetitive.
- The text looks odd when placed right at the edge of the image, it should sit in a little bit.
- Got the colours for india (orange and green) then the england colours (red and white)
- The idea is a unique one but visually it doesn't communicate well to the audience, it looks busy, messy and the colours are rather garish.
- Could think of different ways to use the grid.
- I think the opacity over the squares on the pages is a nice nod to the pitch arrangement without being too obvious.
Could use all imagery as black and white? Remove colour as it's an obstacle.
Using black and white makes sense as this match was a Test match where the uniforms are white for these.
Moved imagery to fit along the centre over the pitch markings.
- Think this placement of imagery works much better, it brings attention to the grid without distracting.
- The type looks random now, needs considering more. Currently in the 'beneath ground' sections of the grid, could make these sections darker?
- Made these sections of the grid darker, it makes the text look like it has a reason to be where it is but still seems random.
- Like the one above one below, maybe make type bigger to have more of an impact without the black background.
- Looks better, still a little unrelated to the imagery, could make it interact like in earlier experiments.
- Think about how they're related so want to display this with the content.
- Overlapping the images with the text.
- Much better but makes the images difficult to see and there's a lot of white space.
- Feel this could be achieved in a different way?
- Having the text in the 'underground' section of the grid lighter, not sure this makes sense surely it would be darker here?
- Looks better this way round.
- The text could be used to display the two different teams as the far left would be one team and the far roght would be another (going by the pitch diagram used for the grid).
- Made text on the right hand page align to the right and the text on the left align to the left, this makes it feel like the letters are both moving toward the middle.
- Feel like this communicated the sport element of opposing teams rather subtly but successfully.
- Going with the idea of different teams making the right page text in Byker to match the india website typeface.
- This feels a little too different, creates a disconnect.
- I prefer the Byker typeface, arial looks as though it's a default and hasn't been considered too well.
- Looks better with this text.
- Want to see about making the text interact again like previous experiments, felt like this was successful.
- Prefer this layout, is it too difficult to read the text?
- The photos make it looks more difficult than it is but could try and edit to fix this.
- Making text that's over the image white, but this isn't very successful, it's still difficult to read, also means there are 3 different tones of text which is a little much for the eye, makes it a less pleasant experience.
- Could make the colour of the background darker so there are only 2 tones of colour within the text. Could be black to look more like when you view an image on a digital screen.
Final Zine:
- White background
- Black background
Overlaid text and image makes the two very interconnected, feel as though this represents the closeness sports fan have with their teams.
- Personally I'm not a big fan of sports but the people I know who are, are very dedicated and feel a close relationship to the sportsmen and women in the teams they support.

Grid inspired by the markings on a cricket pitch as well as the stump placement on the pitch. The design showcases these elements through image placement and text manipulation, they don't overpower the zine but instead develop a visual consistency that's representative of cricket.
I prefer the black background, it reminds me of when you watch video footage or youtube on your phone and there are the black spaces around the video depending on the aspect ratio.
Reflections:
- Worked much faster today, that was good.
- Started with stuff that didn't look right and pulled it back. Felt like today went better and I'm learning techniques about how to design a book quickly.

- For tomorrow was to do the book with more physical elements, like my handwriting, own illustrations etc to see how this goes (only do if appropriate).
- Beginning to trust self more with the process, less worried about outcomes.
