603: Tutorial with Simon

Today's Tasks:

B3 - Concrete Poetry

  • Look up House of Leaves:
The typography helps inform the narrative as it's in 2 parts.
  • Look up conversation analysis:
Symbols are used for the human elements of speech, urms, stumbling on words etc.
  • Look at the first page of 'Great Expectations' by different designers:
Think about how tone can be communicated through different formats.
  • Mentioned about type choice, why Helvetica? Seems modernist to Simon.
    - To me Helvetica is a more neutral typeface but I understand where Simon is comin from.
    - Could look into using a different typeface
Simon suggested if using Helvetica could use Helvetica Now to be more contemporary.
  • Don't be afraid of white space. Simon mentioned how in 'Dear Apocalypse' the rivers make for an interesting and exciting visual.
    - I agree, think I should adapt the final design to be more like this. The layout is still dramatic and lengthy but in a different method to the large type with scrolling.
Think about the tone of poetry, how to communicate this. Simon mentioned how poetry is often delicate.
    - Is this the tone of any of these poems? When love is blind has delicate moments, could do with having the type be smaller, take up less space. 'A Thing About Arms' have a playful tone to it, it is silly and daft, typeface so far feels representative.
What to do now?
- Research: House of Leaves, Great Expectations and conversation analysis.
- Take what learnt from these and apply to designs
- Think about the white space in poems, adapt poems when needed.

B4 - The Guardian

  • Uncommon campaign is really slick and successful, due to the concept that has been applied to the design.
    - I agree, the breaking of design principles is really effective in developing an informal contemporary design.
    - Think about design choices like this that can help appeal to a younger audience.

  • Simon mentioned about young people today being a big part of political movements, this could form the basis of thep project.
    - I mentioned how this fits in well with The Guardian as a brand as they pride themselves of giving a voice to those who need it and also have had a role in activism over the years.
    - Can draw visuals from protest signage for starting point.
What to do now?
- Research into protest visuals and signage, start developing a way for these to work together.
- Think about how to deconstruct design principles to inform a more contemporary, youthful design.
