602: Printed Matter Virtual Artbook Fair (PMVABF) - “Well, is it even a photobook, Dayanita?” with Dayanita Singh and Anshika Varma

Signed up for Printed Matter's book fair, really excited to hear about books and publications from practitioners all over the world.

Hoping I'll learn more ways of thinking and approaching books from other countries and cultures. Wanting to broaden my viewpoint of books and publications.

'the significance of provoking a space between the publishing house and the art gallery, and the endless possibilities presented within it.'

Reflections:
  • This talk was really interesting to hear about the different ways of producing books and what this can mean. Books existing as a form that can be interpreted as a structure, and other forms.
  • The form I found to be the most interesting was the idea of the book as an exhibition in it's own right, it really made me think back to Joe Gilmore and his way of presenting publications.
    - Could help with B7 (research brief) in thinking more openly about a publication and how it can be explored. Currently I'm thinking too narrowly about what a book can be, think about how my imagery is to be experienced and that this open thought of the book can help.
  • Hearing Dayanita talk about photography and how it's viewed as a material was something new I hadn't thought about, this will be really important to think about when moving forward with B9: Home and my collaboration with Felix Watts (photography).
