(B10) Curate.TV: Initial Ideas and Development

Thinking of the key elements that felt playful from the videos:

  • Movement
  • Colour
These two stood out the most, when one was lacking the other brought it back up.

After group call we went away and drew shapes in response to the videos, wanting to try and capture a sense of motion within the static images as we we're experts at animating.
Did these with my younger brother to see what he would draw and if it would be different to my own.

Drawings in response to videos:

Placing these over the text needed for the posters:
- Wanting to understand if it works as a concept or if they look like scrap pieces of paper that have been drawn on.

- The impact wasn't strong but the idea of having shapes drawn onto the poster worked well.
- The drawing needs to be considered to fit around the text or the text needs to fit around the drawing.
- The drawings really work with the idea of play and present a fun aesthetic for the branding. Need to think of:
  1. How this can be pushed forward to a more professional brand?
  2. What would this look like if it was done physically?
  3. How it translates to other elements of the deliverables?

Digital Experiments:

- These had been more experimental, not really taking the positioning of the text into account.
- Could do with developing further.

^ Working around the text here.
- Made the text much more dynamic and interesting, adding in curves as this is something we discussed in the group and said was a positive element of play.

^The last image of the animation could be used for flyers or posters?

^ Experimenting with the colour scheme of the first Curate.TV Live event.
- Feels like it's too similar, should try and pull away and make it stand out in it's own right.

  • These experiments were interesting in terms of the movement that's being incorporated.
  • The digital element however can make the design feel flat, it really doesn't present a sense of play to me, needs to have more texture (like the physical drawn and scanned images).

Talk w/group:
  • Spoke through the work we'd made, felt as though we needed more direction.
  • There we similarities in the shapes we had drawn in response to the videos, most we agitated lines so we felt this would be appropriate to continue through the design.
  • We agreed that text needed more development and that it should be considered alongside the image development to make sure they work cohesively.
  • Colour palette:
    - Black, white, beige and *other colour*
    - We feel the other colour could be either G or R from RGB or a pastel as lanie had been working with pastels and these looked really interesting.
  • We spoke about whether the posters should work on their own or all together. Feel as though all together as well as individually would be best.
    - Taking the idea of play and being playful with the use of the medium would be really good at pushing the theme further.
  • I suggested the idea in image B as having a large shape span across the 6 posters. Drawing on experience walking in the streets if there is a large poster it catched the eye of the audience more so than small ones.
    - Feel it has potential as can be wrapped around corners or put on circular drums in leeds and have a greater impact.
  • We need to consider the other elements of the branding too, wanting to push the deliverables into totes and pins.

What to do next:
- Develop large shape idea, add images and text
- Think about instagram and digital medium, how can we take advantage of this?

Development Post Talk:

Shapes:

Tried adding these to designs but couldn't scale up large enough.

When added they didn't look great, it made me think of arts and crafts more than anything else.
- Having issues with the physicality of it, perhaps would be better to go digital, and more practical as we're working as a group remotely.

Started experimenting with other ways of using digital media:

- Images in colour make little consistency.

- Black and white images look better.
- The paintbrush used looks cheap, looks like a spray paint effect.

- Tried with black background = not good

- Testing out lilac as suggested by group

- Changing brush stroke, this one looks a lot better.
- Changed colour to green (thinking of using G from RGB).

- Adding type in curved way to promote play.

- What a section of the poster alone would look like.
- Added more curvy text.

- With straight text.

Thinking how does this relate to other elements?

When animated:

The motion that comes from the shape is really adds to the playful element of the design.
- Feel this should be included more in the work!

Talking with the group and working forward rosie postes some work she'd been doing:

- The texture in these was something we like, when added to the work it lifts it off the page stops the design from being as flat.

Experimenting with line weight:

Then animating:

> The thin strokes look more like mistakes whereas the large ones present more as a deliberate shape.
> The texture works but need to be more exaggerated.
> The colour needs rethinking:

> Experimenting with the idea of drawing over the shapes, adding more sense of movement and adding play into the work.
> I really like the images where there are doodles over the creative, however when presented to the group they felt as though it was a little too much.

- Using colour selected from the images as background.
- Feel this won't work as well when seen as one big continuous line.
- Should have a single cohesive colour.
- Black and white image makes it easier for the pieces to work together as one unit as well as individual pieces.
- Spoke to group and found the yellow colour was liked by everyone.

Working on this further:
Posters in chain (also work as individual posters)

Playing wit type and type arrangement.
Find image 3 to be most successful, should all images be in the same place on the page? adds continuity.

wonky

in line

The text that's in line looks more professional, feel there are enough elements to communicate the idea of play already.

What to do next?
- Think about animations for instagram, what could these look like?
- Bring ideas and discuss with group.
- Translate idea to other elements.
