602: Newbridge Projects Talk (Employability Fortnight)

  • Offer studios, exhibition and gallery spaces.
  • Allows students to still have a creative community after graduating.
    - Feels this is almost as important as having studio space.
  • Have programmes that open up networking opportunities for growing creatives.
  • Primarily a space for visual artists.
    - Not for people who might be making for things outside of the arts.
    - Seems like a space to help people who want to help the design industry.
  • Have programmes that are multidisciplinary and facilities to support this like dark rooms and gallery spaces.
  • They do lots of community projects and encourge their residents to get involved with this.
    - Respond to the community they're in, currently in city centre so working with local businesses but will be moving to more residential area so projects will change.
  • Short term lease on building but pay a form of council tax.
    - £60-£130 per month for studios (covers everything).

Reflections:
  • This talk didn't seem like it was completely relevant to me as they're often giving the studios to fine artists, and they're based in Newcastle which I'm not considering moving to.
  • However it's interesting to hear what's going on to support the creatives in other cities.
    - Sparks the seed of looking for similar opportunities in cities I move to.
  • Was interesting to hear about the business side and understand more about how these projects run and the 'behind the scenes' as such.
    - Feels like this can help me understand different sides of the creative industry better as currently I know a lot about practicing but not about business.
  • Overall I was glad I attended the talk even if the content wasn't directed to me as I learnt some new things.
