(B1) Out of Context - Initial Research and Ideas

Brief:

Rosie, Zoe and me working on the 'Out of Context' exhibition branding.

RESEARCH AND INSPIRATION:

Neo Neo - La Batie

Description

Art direction, posters, printed matter, signage, book/program, badges, tramways and Mints for la Bâtie, a dance/music/art/theater festival.

I Listened to a talk by neo neo back in March/April and they spoke about this project.
> They mentioned that the festival was well known so the designs didn't need to be too descriptive.
- difference here is that not many people other than those on our course know about the exhibition, so the branding needs to be more descriptive.
- With this in mind don't forget the aesthetic themes presented in the brief.
> They developed a simple design principle and applied it to everything.
> Took a funny humorous approach.

Neo Neo - Paradiso

Description
Visual identity, logo, custom lettering, signage system, posters for café/bar Paradiso in le quartier des bains. Illustrations by sany.dk
Posters serie for monthly events at Paradiso café/bar. Digital Print.

> Branding for a cafe in Geneva.
> What stood out to me was the simplicity of the designs, very minimal colour scheme, the name of the cafe and imagery being the main focus of the text.
> The simplicity of the line work is something that's really attractive about the design.

Blurting ideas:

  • Give people the poster with text and they do what they want to it.

  • Feel like doing something digital would be good, how would it translate?

  • Something in the way it’s distributed could incorporate an example of work.

  • Would want to know people’s essays related to the work.

Blurry colours

^ Having blurred images to create a sense of ambiguity within the designs.
- Thought the posters could then be tiled so if separate the audience is less likely to know what the image is.
- Feel the use of random stock images isn't successful, could be better using something that is related to the module or to design.
- Like the tiled idea but how could it be used better?

- Experimenting with pixelation instead of blurring to add ambiguity.
- Looks too much like censorship, may come across to the audience as though it's an exhibition that may not be appropriate for wide audiences. This wouldn't be good, not wanting to put anyone off from attending, want to encourage people to visit the exhibition.

^ Using burred shapes
- Feel these are more design related than the stock images.
- Like the fact you know what the image is even when it's blurred, allows the audience to figure something out.
- Using primary colours at the moment but think it would be better to have a more minimal colour palette to achieve the brand aesthetics suggested on the brief.
- Think this idea is too basic, it doesn't relate to the exhibition much.
