COP Tutorial 2 Feedback

Notes from Crit:
  • Need reference for chunking in essay.
  • Check over paragraphing when discussing the visual example, be more focused when discussing this topic.
  • Can use Joseph Muller-Brockmann as positive visual example, but can also use references I've found, and I can argue the design principles are positive.
  • Material.io website, design conventions that google and android follow (meant for digital context). Could translate these to user journey observations.
  • Essay going well, don't need to focus on this as much. Still pondering on examples, so can leave writing to one side and begin to focus on practical.
  • Crits next week discussing practical, so bring visual research/examples (which could then be discussed in essay) along with any initial ideas.
  • Thinking of having the highway code as the content for my publication, the content is already there people would use it for learning, they have to retain the information, would be for an adult audience.
  • Worries about publication just looking like another book. But the basic elements of graphic design are often not visible, and that's when it's succeeding. This doesn't matter as long as it's working, it's easily memorable, it's easy to retain the information.
  • May be opportunities to make publication unconventional in terms of aesthetic so people want to engage with it in a personal way because it doesn't just look super mundane. Answer to this will come from research.
  • When developing designs need to be testing strategies and ideas from theory, but also my own aesthetic considerations (eg wacky fonts), and test the effectiveness of this on peers. Don't need to consider ethics here because the content is harmless.
  • From this feedback you can learn what works and what doesn't.
  • The audience is fine as is, don't need to be super specific on an age group. Individuals learning to drive is enough.
  • But worth acknowledging the test group for effectiveness was of a specific age group and this may skew the results but that is the situation at hand due to covid.

What to do next:
  • Revise essay feedback from Simon.
  • Formalise brief for the practical.
  • Start researching for practical, this will weave it's way into essay.
  • Have points to discuss for crit on monday.
