User Journey Planning (Primary Research)

Aim of Observation:

I'm wanting to develop an understanding of usability in relation to publication as there is a lack of this in existing research. I aim to understand in more depth how individuals use books, the navigation and handling in order to design publications that cater to this experience.

Method:

1. Participants complete ethics form and consent to study.

2. I greet participant and tell them there is an object in the room (that they will enter) and I want them to interact with that object as they normally would for 7 mins. I'll let them know that once 7 mins are over I will knock on the door and enter to meet them.

3. I enter the room, start the camera to record, leave and ask the participant to enter (once they do I start timer).

4. I knock on the door once 7 mins have passed, thank the participant. Turn off camera.

Analysis:

I want to complete thematic visual analysis to identify any themes within the interactions.
Thinking about how the participant originally interacts with the object:
- Do people look at aspects in the same order?
- What aspects of the book do they look at?
- Do people read the content, how do they read it?

PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET

Research Project Title

User Journey – An Observation of Usability.

Invitation paragraph

You are being invited to take part in a research project. Before you decide, it is important for you to

understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the

following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Ask me if there is anything that is

not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take

part. Thank you for reading this.

What is the purpose of the project?

The aim of the project is to investigate an area of research that is currently lacking, specifics of this

will be explained further after the investigation and provided on a debrief sheet. The project is due to

last 2 weeks.

Why have I been chosen?

You were chosen as a participant for no specific reason, you will be one of 4 participants.

Do I have to take part?

It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. Refusal to take part will involve no penalty or loss

of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. If you do decide to take part you will be given this

information sheet to keep (and be asked to sign a consent form). If you decide to take part you are still

free to withdraw at any time, without penalty or loss of benefits, and without giving a reason.

What will happen to me if I take part?

The observation will last around 10 mins. This is the only participation involved in the project unless

contacted again.

What do I have to do?

Follow the directions given before the study starts, nothing is unusual or sensitive, the reason the no

specifics are given is to avoid bias. Further information will be provided on a debriefing sheet.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

Whilst there are no immediate benefits for those people participating in the project, it is hoped that

this work will contribute to an area that is understudied.

What happens if the study has to be terminated?

If this is the case the reason(s) should be explained to the participant.

Will my taking part in this project be kept confidential?

All data which is collected about you during the course of the research will be kept strictly

confidential. Any data about you that is disseminated will be anonymised so that you cannot be

identified by it.

What happens immediately after data collection?

You will be debriefed.

What will happen to the results of the research project?

They will be analysed through thematic analysis and discussed within my essay.

Who has reviewed the project?

The project has been reviewed by the Leeds Arts University Ethics Sub-Committee, overseen by the

Research Committee.

Contact for further information

Feel free to contact me after the study for any further information.

Thank you for taking part.

PARTICIPANT DEBRIEF

Research Project Title

User Journey – An Observation of Usability.

What is the purpose of the project?

The purpose of the study was to observe how people naturally use and navigate through a book. There

is a lack of research into publication usability design, so the aim of this study is to see how people use

books and how designers can take this information to design better publications for the audience.

To reiterate from the participant information sheet:

1. You were chosen as a participant for no specific reason, you will be one of 4 participants.

2. All data which is collected about you during the course of the research will be kept strictly

confidential. Any data about you that is disseminated will be anonymised so that you cannot be

identified by it.

3. The results will be analysed through thematic analysis to identify common themes and

discussed within my essay.
