603 Brief Ideas So Far

Text like this = Comments/feedback from tutorial

(1) AN RAF HOME

Thinking about a way of exploring my family's time during the RAF. Wanting to develop a project around the idea of nostalgia and childhood, perhaps comparing the differences between her childhood and mine.

Thinking about a yearning for simpler times, how would this be reflected. Using photographs from my grandad, asking questions to my mum who grew up as part of a forces family. How does this influence her today?

I know little about this time of my mums life, would want to start the project in an investigative way.

Could look into:

  • Differences in tech at the time and allow that to influence the design choices (colour palette, layout etc).
  • travel pattern of my family during the time period, which countries, again thinking about design choices.

Further thinking led me to an idea of home: What was home for my mum as a child? What is it that made her feel at home? How does it differ from my perception of home? I could approach the topic from this angle of exploring "home" from the point of view of my mother, potentially dipping into comparing that of her life with mine?

- Need to decide what category they land in, is there opportunity for collaboration here?

(2)  EXPOSURE (collab w/peggy)

COVID-19 and the national lockdown means staying connected digitally has never been more important for our mental wellbeing during this time of isolation. It has highlighted both the benefits of social media to keep us connected to loved ones, but has also given us a lot more free time to scroll, judge, and compare.

We have been contemplating over the concept of exposing your life to strangers online- how accepted it is to broadcast every highlight of your day, whether it be for 24 hours on an Instagram story or permanently uploaded so even potential employers can see. This has seemingly turned into habit, and we rarely, if ever, consider the privacy risks of this act or the damage it can do long term.

Keeping a written, physical diary is considered a completely intimate, personal and private experience, so why do these rules not apply when we post images, opinions and feelings digitally? This brief asks us to take an intimate approach to exploring the way physical and digital means of documenting our lives can change our views on exposing ourselves to the world, and the risks associated with each. Does what we document physically differ to what we post online? Do we feel happier posting things on social media due to the pace of trends? Do we genuinely post things for ourselves or for other people? Does the idea of having your Instagram feed printed physically, and vice versa, empower or alarm you?

  • This needs investigating further, figuring out a clear direction of where we want to go, but also a timeline of the project.

RESEARCH

Odd Publications: https://oddpublications.com/about/ A data publishing house. Taking digital information and turning it into a physical object. 'Your Tweets in a Book' project is particularly interesting. Asks the question 'do they read differently?'.

  • Printed media seems as though it's going to have been fact checked.
  • Speed of publishing physical objects is much slower so seems more legit.

Navigation of publications - can you recreate the algorithms of digital media in physical media. Books seem honest, but that isn't always true.

Finsta - second instagram where people just document what they want, done to be ironic and funny. Do they propose the same issues as a regular.

(3) A BOOK A DAY (week long)

Designing a zine/publication each day for a week. Quick exercises to push what a book is, and see how content alongside production can influence the audience’s perception.

Very much inspired by Joe Gilmore talk in Level 5, mentioned about how he saw a book as a way of representing real life things in a contained format. In particular one of his books ‘A’ which is described as “An artist's book which investigates the form of the book through the relationship between form and content. In book design, the page functions structurally as a discrete unit around which content is organised. Here, this relationship between form and content is ignored. This is the first in a series of ‘Alphabet’ books which explore new ways of engaging with the book through layout, topology and printing.”

Inspired by Joe Gilmore talk, in particular 7.45 books in a year challenge. Wanting to conduct a similar investigation, and push limits using time as a restriction.

Wanting the books to be made on that day with little preplanning. Use a random word generator to give a direction for each book. Hoping to see how a process may develop over the week, does it become easier, what approaches are adopted etc.

To produce a minimum of 5 books, the form of these books isn’t specified. The theme of each publication will be decided by a random word generator and cannot be changed.

- Comments from Simon suggested using social media, in particular twitter's "trending" feature to provide content for the project, this way I can get a wealth of information and have it feed into current affairs and popular culture. This would provide a basis for the project as well as being able to be expanded.

(4) CONCRETE POETRY (shorter brief, collab?)

Word play with type, wanting to design something that is going to push boundaries of type and visuals. Could be a collaborative project with a creative writer/poet, talking through poetry and what the words mean and applying that to the layout and design of the poems.

Maybe reach out to poets and ask about their work (book from mum for birthday). What could be a good way to inspire this project? Concrete Confinement - book bought during isolation. Inspired by designers like Ryan Carl Studio. Playful take on a serious topic.

'She set out to create a fictional publisher that could release both playful and odd publications. Publications such as Paul Soulellis’ Library of the Printed Web, McSweeney’s Quarterly and Dear Lulu by the students and professors at Hochschule Darmstadt served as inspiration.' - https://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/jun-lin-format-graphic-design-051020

(5) FEMINISM - GENDER DATA GAP (research based)

Wanting to develop a project around feminism, it's not a topic I've discussed before but it's something I’m interested and passionate in.

Listen to no such thing as a fish podcast and discussing the differences between a badass woman and if she were a man she'd be classified as mean. Why is this? What creates this sense of divide?

Last year when reading about the data gap in relation to gender this was a really interesting topic, something I considered developing 505 project on, however I went in a different direction. Maybe this could be revisited, how could I develop this into a brief?

(6) CREATIVE LEEDS

When reflecting on my time in Leeds I feel I hear people talk a lot about how Leeds is such a creative city, with so many opportunities but I can't find them. Could there be one place where creatives can go to find a wealth of opportunities within the city? Places that are good to go work in, shops that help support creatives, designers, freelancers, artists that are based in Leeds etc.

Feel this could be a good digital project to develop, is less of a concept like other briefs and would have a practical outcome that can be both physical and digital.

Reference: https://raffinerie.com/work/kreislauf 'In districts 3, 4 and 5, Zurich pulsates like nowhere else. Circuit 345 has tracked down the best addresses from this creative quarter and invites you to discover special shops, studios and workshops and celebrates this with annual design weekend.' - Raffiene (design studio)

- Could do this in terms of the North
- To be able to find effective things it is a case of filtering things out, following the right people on instagram etc.
- All about sharing, when people find opportunities it's a case of sharing.
- Need to be aware of COVID if taking on this project, not as much may be happening within the city.

Overall Comments:

- Look at 'new creative conscience' and 'RSA' for live/competition briefs.

- Don't leave behind the commercial briefs, need to be able to show employers that I can deliver even when in such restricted boundaries.
