Wanting to gain perspective and locations from friends that resonate with the sense of Sheffield they have. Many of my friends have grown up in Sheffield, some left to go to uni, others stayed, seeing the different perceptions of the city and how people identify with it now would be beneficial to learn before taking photographs.
Ask peers if they can recall anywhere that:
- Hasn't changed and it feels the same
- Has changed and it feels different
- Has changed and feels the same
- Hasn't changed and feels different
Conversation with Felix (photographer) Notes:
- Going to take photos on Saturday.
- Felix mentioned going early in the morning (6am) to get a light that is more hazy, and the lighting will be better for the photos, able to get interesting shadows. We think this will be the best way to capture certain places that have a sense of nostalgia or have a glow to them that relevant to the past.
- Photographing places that are pertinent to past memories to showcase themes:
- Change of structure (or lack of)
- Change of feeling (or lack of)
And how do these relate? - Feel the way we feel about Sheffield lies within the people as well as small happenings in spaces around the city.
- Focus on places where we relate a specific time or feeling to.
- Nether Edge
- Machon bank from both ends one way not familiar other so familiar
- Nether Edge News
- Bakery
- Angular path up to closed housing - Woods near mums
- Allotment
- "Dancing Stage”
- Post box in the wall - Bingham park
- Tree (top and bottom)
- Bowling Green - Western Bank
- Library
- Floor Markings
- Bike Locks - Shops on Montgomery Road
- Charlies Pantry - Keep an eye out for
- Renovations
- Imagery representing renewal
- Quirks in the city that you notice if you’ve been hanging around
- The buildings up in Fulwood like the church and the Scout hut – So many years of my childhood spent running through round and they feel exactly the same.
- The town centre feels quite different now. It feels like the heart is kind of shifting from fargate to the Moor because of the work that’s been happening. - feels new and shiny.
- Ecclesall road the shops are chopped and changed all the time but the vibe has always been the same – a bit less city vibey than town but still a fun sort of busy
- We recently moved house so walking around past my old house feels strange and a bit sad even though it’s not changed. It’s sad because I know it like the back of my hand but it’s not actually my home any more so I feel like a bit of an intruder.
Sentimental value:
- My old house – SO many memories and so many deep chats with people round the fire in our front garden
- 'Dog poo park’ a field up near forge dam cafĂ© just reminds me of hot Sunday afternoons playing ultimate Frisbee and eating ice lollies from co-op
- Lovely times in Broomhill costa meeting with people either in ‘study’ periods or after school
LOIS:
Hasn't changed and it feels the same:
The crucible and tudor square, worked there did shows there. Doesn’t change that much. Feels exactly the same, queued to get ticket, at a bar getting a drink.
Walk from the train station has changed but it feels the same, always feels lovely, always feels sunny. Reminds of summer evenings.
Mamas and leonie’s been there so long, been going there since a kid.
Becomes a landmark.
Home, feels the same cos it never changes, the really old buildings at the bottom of the road, the community centre, school and church were all built at the same time. This is where she’d walk. Holds so many memories, went to church every week for a drama class.
Holds a bit of you.
Has changed and it feels different:
The moor, feels like a different city. Sheffield is little winding roads, alley ways, everything’s makeshift but the moor, flat wide road with commercial shops feels like manchester. No character to it.
Kelham island, a positive reaction to it. It feels like a puzzle, businesses find a way to fit there, you mould yourself to it. Growth it the selling point.
Has changed and feels the same:
Division street, even though it’s changed.
West street is the big night out and division street is the alternative night out. More weird, different things on that road.
Know what you’re getting when walking along that street, an indie bar and a quirky shop, you know it won’t be as commercial.
Hasn't changed and feels different:
Secondary school, you hold yourself differently so going to a place where you used to have fear and worry and not feeling those things. Feels weird, feel like you should be stressed. The smell as well, reminds you of weird interactions, everything seems small.
Hillsborough football ground, anywhere with a particular memory of as a child and then you return to and you realise you’re a different person.
Was scared of men and cheering, but now holds self differently so you own a space because you can.
People’s houses you went to school with.
Rother valley, thinking its a cool beautiful landscape but then you realise it isn;t after you see beautiful places.
Likes Sheffield because it’s not just the city centre. This is the reason lots of people don’t like it, but it’s why we love it.
Really interesting to talk to friends and see how everyone has their own stories about a place. Have weird feelings toward a city you grew up in because you hold yourself differently in the spaces.
Was strange to realise the similarities between these conversations, the moor popped up as a place we all mentioned. - What I found out through talking to my friends is that everyone has their own sense of place within the city. The buildings and locations that Lois and Lani would photograph if they were doing this project would be completely different to mine. The idea of having a number of publications that show different people's "sense of Sheffield" could be a way to expand on the brief post degree.
