602: PMVABF - The Natural Enemies of Books: A Messy History of Women in Printing and Typography, with Maryam Fanni, Matilda Flodmark, Sara Kaaman, Haytham Nawar, Danielle Aubert, and Madeleine Morley ︎︎

Departing from their book (Occasional Papers, 2020), feminist graphic design research collective MMS (Maryam Fanni, Matilda Flodmark and Sara Kaaman) invite colleagues to discuss projects aiming to expand graphic design history beyond the canon, looking into the "messy" histories of BIPOC, womxn, and laborers.

- These images are excerpts from ... the distaff side publication. It was exciting to see the works of women in print, publishing and type from many years ago.
- It was also interesting as I resonated with some of the topics discussed relating to women in print (more from the perspective of graphic design as a male dominated industry). Hearing about these women and the work they did was very inspiring.

- Seeing work from arabic designers was something new for me, I often keep in my own bubble that is very westernised. Seeing and hearing about the practitioners and their work was a big broadening experience for me, I'd love to start looking further afield when researching as there is a wealth of design that is amazing out there.

- The publications above I found to be really exciting pieces to look at, the bold use of colour makes for a very contemporary publication.
- I particularly love the portrait drop caps on the last image, they remind me of stamps with the faces. I think it adds a nice touch of content to the text without even having to read it and gives a liveliness to the work.

My Notes:

Reflections:
  • This talk was really interesting to attend, hearing the panelists discuss their different ways of approaching and presenting research, as well as the struggles of gathering research around such niche topics of interest (not so much in the case of Haytham).
  • It was great to hear about different designers throughout history who aren't as well known and the stories that accompany them, it really opened up my eyes to the size of the design world and the variation within it.
     - It was really inspiring to hear these stories, was an exciting discussion.
