Communication skills when working with practitioners across multi-disciplines?
Sophia:
- Being honest. Reputation is really important within publishing, need someone to be honest, if you can't get something done in time (freelancing) would rather know the real timeline.
- When first speaking to people it's great to hear a voice.
Arthur:
- Visual updates, pdf and a phone call work well and are good to keep up communication.
- Show things when the time is right.
Getting a sense of who you are can help with employers wanting to hire you for a job.
Siding
- Branding for cafe
- Worked with illustrator in the project to enrich the design
Had a good project arch, understanding the work of an illustrator to be able to apply it appropriately.
Really like this project, executed with consideration to the client, audience and collaborators.
Collaboration, what this means to them?
Arthur:
- Collaboration can be ingrained in the work, photographer to document your work is just as important as the work.
- Talk to clients before external collaborators so make it known that they're working as a team when it comes to pushing a certain idea. Talk about this in terms of collaboration even though it's a commercial relationship.
Sophia:
- Production and illustration are the areas where the most fun aspects of the job exist.
Portfolios that stand out:
Arthur:
- When someone's personality is coming through even in the form of a pdf, managing to make the portfolio feel like it's you is important.
- Lots of work in progress, these are also useful and are interesting to them
Reflecting:
This talk was directed towards illustration students so there were many areas I didn't feel were relevant to my practice, but it was really great to hear a different perspective on the creative industry and what it's like to professionally work with illustrators.
- Is good to widen horizons and educate self so more prepared for collaborations in the future.
It was great to hear Sophia talk as someone working within publishing, she spoke very openly and honestly about how it is at Random house, some of the things that were annoying others that were great.
- To me it feels really important to get a clear view of different areas of publishing to help myself with navigating the industry.
