(B7) Research Brief: What to do?

TOPICS

Thinking about what to look at for research brief.
Wanting to go with Ambers suggestion of doing something that 'isn't a practical process', did this in 505 and 503 and they ended up being some of my favourite briefs.

Mindmapping ideas to try and find subject area:

Lots of ideas here, some definitely will not be using but there are some interesting ones:

Ideas I liked most:
  1. Music, Orchestras, Movement, Body of People
  2. Sudoku, Where did it come from?
  3. Architecture, Aunty Penelope, Structure, Shape
  4. Bookshops, History, Village Leeds, Leeds Shops
  5. Pattern Drafting
Need to research into these further.

1. Music, Orchestras, Movement, Body of People:

  • Found the ways of recording music to be interesting in these sections. How the different materials work, what situations music recording took place in.
  • The orchestra itself is interesting as there are many rules that will change the way an orchestra sounds but also what it's called. The number of people, the type of instruments, the number of types of instruments.

2. Sudoku, Where did it come from?:

  • Researching into Sudoku was fascinating as I've played Sudokus since I was little but never understood where they came from.
  • When researching I got real 'Queen's Gambit' vibe from the world championship, this idea of it being a "nerdy" puzzle game but with serious applications in the real world.
  • The terminology for the different moves was a cool find, it made me want to learn more and better my sudoku skills as the method I do now is just guess work.

3. Architecture, Aunty Penelope, Structure, Shape:

  • Looking into architecture as a topic is very broad, there are so many different avenues to explore, found it overwhelming to navigate.
  • Feel the topic may be too related to design, not sure what direction to go in.
  • Nothing jumped out to me as being particularly interesting when looking at the topic, would need to find something niche within this area to explore further.

4. Bookshops, History, Village Leeds, Leeds Shops:

  • Researching Leeds city centre history was interesting, feel as though again the area would needs to be made smaller and find a niche. The arcades could be a way to do this.
  • I find it interesting learning about the history of places but don't feel like my passions lie here, I like learning about history if it's going to help me understand something better.

5. Pattern Drafting

  • When looking into this area I wasn't drawn in by anything, it seems as though it could lead on to a topic of feminism since pattern drafting and the art of making clothes was originally a women led industry.
    - Would I want to do a project on feminism?
    - Thinking back to talk with Phoebe before christmas, is it something I feel I can comment on?
