(B3) Concrete Poetry: Idea Development, Animation, Layout

Breaking the poem into sections surrounding the breaks in the speech.
- Thinking this could be animated in time to the audio (but not have the audio playing).
- Feel the words could represent the speech like a type of music score. Developing a way to score poetry.

This form of presentation feels much more suited to the way the poem is spoken, adds  space around the words since the poem is rather long.

There are elements that need considering that are yet to be thought about:
- Colour
- Typeface
- Animation
- Imagery
- Audio
These can all have an impact on how the text is then perceived by the audience.
REMEMBER THE BRIEF - How can we forge new ways of experiencing poetry that are more engaging?

How can each of these elements be used?

Editing text:
Adding in typeface with stretched anatomy for the letters where that sound is exaggerated.

Changing size and weight of type to add emphasis and show a change in tone when it is spoken.

Again adding in stretched typeface for sounds that are emphasised.

Tone changed in the poem, goes from being more playful to very serious. Felt a change in typeface to serif would be appropriate for this end section.

Again, serif for more serious tone.

Testing with colour, communicating a change in tone here with a gradient effect.
- Shows a change and shift.
- Feels to gradual, in the audio it goes from one to the other quickly, could maybe do with a more harsh change.

Harsh divide between colors shows a split, feel this works well.

Experimenting more with ways to display exaggerated sounds.
- Feel ones like this look obvious when static, could be more interesting to see when animated.

Thinking so far?
  • Wanting to animate the text, feel this way the experience would be more immersive, echo the performance element more clearly.
  • Feel the use of colour could be tested more, see what impact.
  • Like the serif typeface, has a softness to it that you hear in Myles' voice as he's talking through the poem, but could another typeface be more appropriate? The tone of the poem is fun and playful could find a typeface that demonstrates this better.
  • Think back to the idea earlier: Developing a way to score poetry.
^ Editing the text to appear in time to the audio but no audio is there, creates a pace and way of understanding how the words were said.
- It also gave clarity to some of the text alterations (such as underscores and spacing) and made them make sense more.

How is it going to be viewed?
- Digitally
- Physically
This will have an impact on the direction the project goes in.
Feel if it is a physical thing would need to be a book or type of printed matter.

Currently the text is running on the same line, but this doesn't reflect the speech.
- Could alter the placement of the letters on the line to present a new way of representing text.

^Representing changes in pitch within the words.
- Has a connection to sheet music almost.

What to do next?
Experiment with the idea of a visual music score through these methods alone:
1. Colour
2. Typeface
3. Layout
Analyse outcomes and see which is most effective.
Take the successes and work from there.
