Simon Tutorial 5 Feedback and Development

Blue highlight = essay research influence

PRESENTATION:

Feedback:
  • Full colour chapter pages, either design choice, full bleed or not, is justifiable just need to make sure I'm reflecting on that justification.
    - Designers can break the rules if it's necessary
    - Readers should gain pleasure from the reading experience and how this encourages learning and retention.
    - If someone gets distracted by the full colour pages that's on them.

  • The 3rd image with the red bar isn't ideal, makes the central text look off.
Just need to finalise the choice for chapter page.

  • Suggest for the navigation incorporate the dots into the title pages.
    - Even if the sections move it looks good, it works for the pages of content just see how it works for the titles.

  • Flicking is an important form of navigation.
    - Make sure elements that have been designed for this are clear and well explained on blog and design boards.

  • Serif or sans serif, mentioned about soft serifs being more appealing than other serifs.
    - Simon says it looks like a legit publication as it works aesthetically and is supported by research.

  • Using numbers to identify the rules.
    - Positive that taken out the word 'rule' taking out what isn't necessary.
    - Thinking back to research about how to streamline the audience's attention.

  • Cover, spacing between 'highway' and 'code' is too large, need to reduce this (may become more obvious when it's printed out).
    - The left image is the strongest but feels the traffic light is too obvious, just needing to find something that's a little different. If can't find anything different then the traffic light cover is fine.
    - The idea of it wrapping around the spine to the back is really nice.

  • Keep justifying design choices on blogs, make sure they're thoroughly explained.

Essay:
Small alterations to be made in the text, in terms of referencing.
Then adjustments to the table to make it work within the text better.

DEVELOPMENT:

Chapter Pages:

Need to print book with these pages and see how they work.
- Think about using yellow? Is this working should it be changed as not needing to have white text over the top there isn't enough contrast. Making it difficult to read.

COVER:

Incorporating road markings:

Box grid on the cover:

Could incorporate the same features into the book, both negative or positive.
- High contrast, instantly catches the eye through the bold colours.

Keep entrance clear triangle:

More ideas working off road markings and road signs:

A
B

C
D
  • Using road signs to make the imagery for the cover.
    - Wanting to use vibrant colours to catch the audience's attention (positive technique to use for cover, 'to catch someone's eye, bright colors might be best' - Mone, G. (2002) Color Images More Memorable Than Black And White. Scientific American. Available at: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/color-images-more-memorab/ (Accessed 30 November 2020).)
  • The background should have a colour, black background with white text is really striking, has a high level of contrast ('The right combination of colours is important because it can produce higher level of contrast, and this can influence memory retention.' - Dzulkifli, M. and Mustafar, M., 2013. The Influence of Colour on Memory Performance: A Review. Malays J Med Sci, 20(2), pp.3-9.)
  • Think these are working, they relate to the content and fit the aesthetic within the publication.
    - Want to go with black cover with white text, provides a nice contrast with the inside of the publication.
    - Could perhaps print onto coloured paper? Could do this on image C.
Tried with the idea of having yellow paper, however it reminds me of the yellow pages.
The colour scheme also seems more like warnings that driving instructions, also rather bee-ish due to the yellow and black.
Made the original traffic light idea but with black background.
- Feel this works well, has more interest, and the traffic lights wrapping around the spine is a nice detail for when the book is placed on a shelf it still stands out.
- Feel it gives a nod to the navigational dots on the inside of the book too.

What to do?
- Print favourite covers and see how they look when on the book.
- Finalise pages, make everything correct and cohesive.
