603 Visual Research, Developing Briefs

The Printed Web

The project has been described as "web culture articulated as printed artifact," an "archive of archives," characterized as an "accumulation of accumulations," much of it printed on demand. Techniques for appropriating web content used by artists in the collection include grabbinghuntingscraping and performing, detailed by Soulellis in "Search, Compile, Publish," and later referenced by Alessandro Ludovico.

The collection is used primarily for experimental publishing research, as a way to question issues of copyright, privacy and appropriation by artists on the internet, and as the basis for academic workshops in design and new media.

- Really like the concept of this, the idea of  'web culture as a printed artifact' is particularly interesting. However, I wonder to what extent this publication is representative of web culture. It's a very refined looking publication, but each edition focuses on a different aspect of the web. As a collection the the works become more representative of the web as a whole.

- The overall aesthetic of this first edition is very pleasing, it has a sense of structure however as the book goes on it becomes a stream of images, much like the internet, this is also the same in the second edition.  It is a unique reading experience, I've only seen the editions online but would really like to experience them in physical form to see the difference in impact.

- Think about this project in relation to peg collab but also a book everyday brief.

VERY STUCK.
WHAT AM I INTERESTED IN?
  • Psychology
  • Ways of thinking
  • Feminism
    - Why is it so controversial?
    - Is it even controversial?
  • Activism
    - Why do people feel the need to have a cause?
    - Why is activism important?
    - What can a designer do within activism?
  • Propaganda in media
  • People's childhood experience
    - How does this shape a person?
  • My parents upbringing
    - Mum born in Cyprus due to grandad being in the RAF
    - What was it like for my mum, where did she move to?
  • Personal experiences
    - Wanting to figure out a way of developing this into design work.
  • Impacts of lockdown on people
    - Currently feeling like I can't be bothered with a lot of things I used to be bothered about.
    - Lots of things feeling unimportant anymore.
    - Feeling how fragile the UK is right now.
  • Social media
    - It's impacts positive and negative
  • Relationships
    - Why am I so dependent on another human?
    - Why do people depend on me?
Wanting to figure out a topic to discuss and investigate further in my practice. But what?

BRIEF IDEAS

(1) Life in the RAF

Thinking about a way of exploring my family's time during the RAF. Wanting to develop a project around the idea of nostalgia and childhood, perhaps comparing the differences between her childhood and mine.

Thinking about a yearning for simpler times, how would this be reflected. Using photographs from my grandad, asking questions to my mum who grew up as part of a forces family. How does this influence her today?

I know little about this time of my mums life, would want to start the project in an investigative way.

Could look into:

  • Differences in tech at the time and allow that to influence the design choices (colour palette, layout etc).
  • travel pattern of my family during the time period, which countries, again thinking about design choices.

02Homes by Greyheads, record sleeve, 2019. Homes is a journey through space and time, travelling in opposite but joined paths that lead to the places we call home. The concept of the record is to carry the listener to experience what every place and time can in any way, represent home, characterised by different atmospheres, sounds, images and sensations.

- Really like this idea a notion of 'home' and using sound to make the audience feel a sense of home.
- Poses the question as to what "home" feels like, I imagine it's different for different people. How does my mum perceive her home, her childhood home as she had to move around so much.

07 “The same object. The same material. The same function. But different. The way in which the bodies and volumes are molded can define their uniqueness and peculiarity”. Uprights is a series of photographs shot by Tex Bishop and art directed by us, published on Bound Magazine issue 1, 2019

- This one isn't really related to my project but it was a concept I really liked. The simplicity of the idea combined with it's presentation in book form is striking.

Further thinking led me to an idea of home:

  • What was home for my mum as a child?

  • What is it that made her feel at home?

  • How does it differ from my perception of home?

I could approach the topic from this angle of exploring "home" from the point of view of my mother, potentially dipping into comparing that of her life with mine?
